Areas of Specialty

Trauma & PTSD

Adverse life events affect people differently. Even members of family often experience the same event differently with one member experiencing trauma and another not. Karen has received specialized training and supervised experience for treating trauma. She has participated in two formal research studies on treating children with traumatic experiences and trauma symptoms. Karen offers several types of therapy for processing trauma, including Trauma-Focused CBT,  Accelerated Resolution Therapy, and EMDR.

Depression & Anxiety

There are different types and causes of depression and anxiety, and different types of treatment for them. Some individuals want medication to be a part of their treatment, and some do not. While I do not prescribe medication, I can refer clients to professionals who do. I treat depression and anxiety holistically using several different models such as cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and exposure  response prevention (ERP), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), somatic interventions, and schema therapy.

Relationship Distress

Relationships are one of the most rewarding and one of the most distressing areas of our lives. Deeply satisfying relationships require intimacy which raises vulnerability. There is no perfect relationship although there are many satisfying relationships based on healthy friendship, respect, and appreciation for each other. Couples are assessed together and individually to identify core problems and needs so a mutually agreeable treatment plan can be developed. Karen uses Gottman techniques, CBT, and interpersonal skills development to assist those who want to improve their relationships.
